Hidetoshi Nakayama

Knifemaker Hidetoshi has been a netsuke artist for over 15 years. Netsuke are miniature sculptures that were invented in 17th-century Japan to serve a practical function (the two Japanese characters ne+tsuke mean “root” and “to attach”). Traditional Japanese garments—robes called Kimono had no pockets; however, men who wore them needed a place to store their personal belongings, such as pipes, tobacco, money, seals, or medicines.

Their solution was to place such objects in containers (called sagemono) hung by cords from the robes’ sashes. The containers may have been pouches or small woven baskets, but the most popular were beautifully crafted boxes which were held closed with sliding beads on cords. Whatever the form of the container, the fastener that secured the cord at the top of the sash was a carved, button-like toggle called a netsuke.

Direct from the Maker from the East Coast Custom Knife Show 2013

Hidetoshi has taken his talent for carving in a new direction – Whether you want a tough example of the Bolt Action (like a Mannlicher) or if you want a refined version with the same mechanism (like a Weatherby) ~ Hidetoshi now offers either one.

This is his Presentation Bolt Action Pen in Box Elder wood

This unique Bolt Action Pen is hand carved from one solid piece of stainless steel for each section, the frame for each piece has a beautiful Box Elder Overlay that was also carved from one piece.

Just as with his Solid Steel Knives this one is Signed on the Reverse side.

This pen has very nice balance and due to the Taper and contouring of the lower Box Elder overlay it is very comfortable to hold.

The top is completed with a lanyard loop. The ball point retracts and locks both in open and closed positions using the bolt-action mechanism.

Caran d’Ache of Switzerland, Giant Cartridge Goliath, 8428.000 Medium Black refills. It can be easily changed by unscrewing the front of the pen.
