Direct from the Maker at BLADE 2011
Herb brought several knives to the Blade show this year and I was the first at his table, I hand selected a few that I felt were the best he had to offer.
When Herb goes to a show he occasionally makes two or three knives with his own Mosaic Damascus, I purchased all of his Mosaic pieces this year.
This big knife has a large and wide Striking Mosaic Damascus blade, this High Carbon Damascus has over 1,200 layers and will perform as well as it looks. Plenty of belly for skinning and plenty thick enough for jointing an animal. I did not picture it but the spine is almost completely Fileworked.
The handle is made of Fossilized Oosik – the Oosik (also known as Baculum) is used for copulation and varies in size and shape by species. A very rare and unique material indeed.
The Rich caramel color of this Oosik is flanked by Nickel Silver Spacers and a Stabilized Maple Burl spacer, these really accentuate the natural colors of the handle. The large full grip handle has been contoured with a slight swell toward the rear which fills the palm nicely. Generous in length so even wearing gloves this knife will feel right!
The Heavy Leather sheath has a rare Dark Ostrich Leg Skin inlay and Tooling around the mouth of the Sheath. Nice snug fit and a wonderful compliment to the knife. Don’t miss out on this one.
Check back often as I have more from Herb Derr that I will be listing.
